The app icon rules that get apps rejected (iOS + Android)

Icon problems are the sneakiest store rejections, because the app works fine — it’s the artwork that fails review. Here are the rules that actually bounce submissions, and the one trap that caught me.

iOS: the alpha channel is the classic rejection

Your App Store icon is a 1024×1024 PNG with no transparency. If the file has an alpha channel — even if nothing looks see-through — App Store Connect rejects it:

The app icon can't be transparent nor contain an alpha channel.

Export it flattened (no alpha) and square. And make sure the icon in your asset catalog matches the one in App Store Connect — a mismatch is its own flag.

Android: adaptive icons need a safe zone

Android uses an adaptive icon: a foreground layer and a background layer the OS masks into a shape (circle, squircle, whatever the launcher wants). If your art extends to the edges of the foreground, the mask clips it. Keep the important content inside roughly the central ~66% and let the background paint to the edges.

Common failure: a logo that’s centered on iOS looks cropped on Android because it ignored the safe zone.

The trap: your splash icon is not your app icon

This is the one that bit me. The splash screen artwork and the launcher icon are different assets — and it’s easy to upload the wrong one to the store listing. If the icon on your listing doesn’t match the icon users see installed, Google flags it as a “misleading icon.”

Fix: keep one source of truth for the launcher icon, generate every size from it, and use that file for the store listing too.

What to check before you upload

These are cheap to check and expensive to miss — a two-day review bounce over a transparency channel you can’t even see.
